Meet The Staff

Also Known As: The Chickens

We’re soft-hearted farmers here and our chickens are more like pets with benefits than livestock. They each have names and every single one is loved and special to us. We don’t cull our chickens just because they’re roosters (rooster lives matter too!) and we won’t cull our hens when they get old and stop laying eggs for us either. Eventually, as our hens age out of laying and are replaced by younger ones, I’d like to create a retirement coop where the older girls can all live out the henopause portion of their lives together while free ranging the yard and doing pest control.

With the exception of one flock, our birds are raised in family groups consisting of one rooster and a group of hens. Each flock has its own standalone coop with free access to an outdoor pens with bugs, grass and sunshine. Each coop has a covered outdoor area where the flock can go outside even in poor weather and stay dry and comfy. Right now we have nine coops but I will be consolidating three small ones into one larger one in the spring of 2025 so we will be down to seven. That’ll make one for each rooster and his flock as well as one for our special needs hen, Poppy, and her friend Nem (the only flock that doesn’t include a rooster).

** This page is currently a work-in-progress as I add each individual chicken but, soon, everyone will be here. Scroll on down and meet the hens and roosters of Westholme.

The Production Managers

Our Roosters

These guys are in charge of flock relations, snack finding, dancing and protecting their hens. Our roosters may not provide us with eggs but they are on duty 24/7 taking care of their flocks.

Our “Yard Birds”

Poppy and Nemesis “Nem” are the only hens we have that don’t live with a rooster. Poppy is special needs and needed to be separated from her flock, she originally lived with Levy. Nemesis got kicked out of her former flock when they all decided to try to kill her. She used to live with Noel. While they were living side by side recuperating from illness and injury they became friends. Poppy is a very dominant hen, Nemesis is very submissive so their personalities worked well together. They’ve become inseparable at this point and neither can return to their old flocks so I built them their very own coop.
